BRIDGE HYDRAULICS, BRIDGE SCOUR

Back to List of Services

Globally, nhc is at the forefront of hydraulic analysis and design of bridges. nhc principals have contributed significantly to basic and applied research in the field of bridge hydraulics, and have been instrumental in the development of internationally recognized guidelines for the hydraulic design of bridges.

nhc specialists have consulted on more than a thousand bridges in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Southern Asia.  They have been involved in planning, design and forensic (post-mortem) engineering processes, and have a unique perspective that derives from having conducted systematic evaluations of large inventories of bridges for a number of transportation agencies and industries,

Examples:

  • Hydraulic design for about 100 km of the new Vancouver Island Highway, Canada. Services included hydraulic design for bridges, culverts, and highway drainage, and often included environmental mitigation work.
  • Seven year program to assess the scour potential and vulnerability for over 400 bridges under a National Bridge Scour Program, USA.
  • Review of detailed design of a major bridge crossing of the lower Mekong River, Vietnam.
  • As part of a program for seismic upgrading, nhc estimated potential degradation at, and determined foundation vulnerability to failure for, over 100 bridges in California, USA.
  • Evaluation of failure of two major railroad bridges after a serious flood in northwestern USA.
  • Forensic examination, and design of rehabilitation for a major railway bridge that failed in Peru.
