FLOOD RISK SPECIALIST - NHC Vancouver, British Columbia

Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) is an international firm of consulting engineers and geoscientists providing professional services for the development, management, and protection of water resources. We have an immediate opening for a Flood Risk Specialist to be based in our North Vancouver office who will be responsible for the development and delivery of flood risk assessments and integrated flood management plans to local communities, governments, planning organizations, and private industry. Working closely with a team of hydraulic modeling specialists, hydrologists, and GIS experts, the Flood Risk Specialist will provide the expertise necessary to develop state of the art flood management strategies and flood mitigation projects in coastal and riverine environments. The Flood Risk Specialist will also have expertise in structural and non-structural flood mitigation, familiarity with floodplain mapping products and GIS tools, and knowledge of decision support methodology. Familiarity with municipal flood bylaws, flood management policy and legislation in Canada, as well as guidelines for risk mitigation is considered an asset.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in water resource engineering, resource management planning, environmental engineering, or geography.
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in the field of flood risk assessment and flood management, either in public or private sector organizations.
  • Expertise in assessing hazard consequences with respect to public safety, cultural and social values, environmental values, as well as potential impacts to infrastructure and economics.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present to and facilitate with technical and non-technical groups, stakeholders, and communities.
